Great party favor idea!

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I took my kids to a birthday party last week and was so impressed with the party favor.  I just had to share with all of you and give props to my friend Sara for coming up with this.  My kids each got a $5 Gift Certificate to Barnes and Noble Bookstore.  The girls card has Fancy Nancy on it and the boys had pirates.  I just loved the idea of giving something the kids could actually use to pick out what they wanted, it gave me an outing to take them to the bookstore and encourages reading and the value of money.  Clearly, most books cost more than $5 so it helped my kids understand the value of what they had been given as a gift as well as what money we used to put towards the book they had chosen.  This didn’t take much effort on Sara’s part in regards to having to make special gifts for each kid either.  I am so appreciative of her generous party favor and thankful that we have discovered a new place to have an outing…the bookstore!  My kids love Barnes and Noble now!

You could probably do this at your local book store too!  Thanks Sara for inspiring me to be more creative with the gifts I give kids rather than just another bottle of bubbles:)

Lost Pines Resort

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

My family just got back from a vacation and it was well worth blogging about!  If you haven’t had a chance to take your family here this would be a great weekend getaway with the kids.  Probably one of the most kid friendly places to stay we have ever been to.  The rooms were nothing extraordinary but the grounds were worth spending your time outside…even on a hot summer day.

Lost Pines is owned by Hyatt Regency and located in Bastrop, TX (right outside of Austin).  They have a beautiful golf course, horses to ride, a wonderful pool, water slize, lazy river and great activities almost every hour throughout the day.  From face painting to digging for worms and kickball games, Lost Pines is a place to take the whole family.  They have tons of bicycles and kid bikes you can use, walking paths, hiking trails, and great food from a few different restaurants on the main campus.

If you want to learn more about Lost Pines you can check out their web page HERE.

Summer is HERE!!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

It is only the 2nd day of summer and my kids are already driving me CRAZY!  It doesn’t help that they have been running fevers the past 2 days, but the days are creeping by.  So…it is time for some summer suggestions.  Write in with your favorite activity to do with your kids during the summer to help the days go by!  Then I can take all of the suggetions and write a blog about new ideas for all of us Savvy Mommas to do.

We have already baked cupcakes, painted pictures and been swimming like crazy.  New ideas needed PLEASE!

The Gypsy Couture

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Probably the most unique and fun party and shopping idea I have seen in a long time!  This is worth checking out and planning your next girls night out.  The Gypsy Couture is a traveling boutique that brings along the latest fashion and trends right to your home.  All you have to do is schedule your next girls night, book Gypsy Couture and then shop away!  The Gypsy Couture shows up in an old vintage trailer that has been remodeled on the inside to be a boutique.  It even has a dressing room!  Tons of cute and affordable clothes to try on right at your door step.

If you are looking for a new night out and want to make sure all your friends will have a blast, grab a couple bottles of wine, your best friends and call Gypsy Couture to bring all the latest fashions!  Such a creative idea.  Check them out!!!

It really is Incredible!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

With all of the rain we have been lately my kids and I were going stir crazy last week!  So, we decided to venture out somewhere we had never been.  It was enough for me to meet the manager and let them know I wanted to blog about what a great experience we had at Incredible Pizza Company.

Incredible Pizza is a large indoor play area that also serves delicious pizza, pasta, baked potatoes, beverages and dessert.  The best thing of all was how incredibly clean I found this place to be.  They have bumper cars, go karts, mini bowling lanes, putt putt golf, and tons of other games.  Their system is great too.  You buy a buffet meal and a game card that has the money on the card.  Kids don’t lose tokens and parents get to keep track of how much money is left on the card to make it fair for your kids to have equal playing time.  Most of the games you play allow you to win tickets.  Once you are ready to leave, total up your tickets so your child goes home with a prize :)

Incredible Pizza Company has great savings offered throughout the week:  $1 buffet Monday: with $15 game card purchased, 2 for $20 Tuesday: receive 2 kid’s buffets and 2 $10 game cards for only $20, Wacky Wednesday: choose your option of timed play and receive unlimited play on all attractions and video games, Double Thursdays: they will DOUBLE the value on all game play with your buffet purchase, Friday: purchase $20 game card and get $10 free added to the card!

Mi Casa Tamale Restaurant

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

I think I have found my new favorite place to hang out on a Friday night!  Outside patio, live band, basketball court, 2 trampolines and about 10 Rainbow Playsystems lined up for your kids to be in playground heaven.  Oh, and did I mention the food has great tex-mex and delicious margaritas?!?!   Mi Casa is located off of I-10 and Ralph Fair Rd.  Definitely a kid friendly place with very affordable meals for the whole family.  This is a must try place!

Big Lou’s Pizza

Monday, April 5th, 2010

If you are looking for a fun experience and a great place to host a party, you might want to check out Big Lou’s Pizza restaurant for a memorable way to eat a pizza.  This restaurant has been featured on Man vs. Food on the Travel Channel because of it’s unique way of serving pizza.  You can order a 42 inch pizza that will feed an army!  It literally takes up the entire table.  You have to hold your drink in your lap in order for the pizza to fit.  It is recommended not to add too many toppings or the dough will get too soggy.  This could be a funny and adventurous night out with your friends, date night with other couples or for a bday party for bigger kids.  The pizza is tasty too!  Check it out.  You can find them at:

Easter Story with Easter Cookies

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The Easter Story Cookies

To be made the evening before Easter.

You need:

1 cup whole pecans
1 tsp. vinegar
3 egg whites
pinch salt
1 cup sugar
zipper baggie
wooden spoon
tape
A Bible

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. This is important! Don’t wait until you’re
half done with the recipe!

Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested,
He was beaten by the Roman soldiers.
Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar.
Put 1 tsp. vinegar into mixing bowl.
Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross,
He was given vinegar to drink.
Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life.
Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life.
Read John 10:10-11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and
brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears
shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin.
Read Luke 23:27.

So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing.
Add 1 cup sugar.
Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died
because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him.
Read Ps. 34:8 and John 3:16.

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks
are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus.
Read Isa. 1:18 and John 3:1-3.

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie
sheet.  Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid.
Read Matt. 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF.
Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that
Jesus’ tomb was sealed.
Read Matt. 27:65-66.

NOW GO TO BED!
Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.  Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was
sealed.
Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first
Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.
Read Matt. 28:1-9
