Eat Fit! Live Fit!

Monday, November 7th, 2011

About 9 months ago our family decided to really change our eating habits.  We were never unhealthy eaters but realized we could be doing a whole lot more to be healthy and educate our children about the importance of eating right.  We literally donated all the food in our pantry and fridge and started from scratch.  We now buy all natural, all organic options (unless we are eating out-that is our splurge time) and I can finally testify to say IT IS WORTH IT!

The prices are a bit higher, but now that we are eating the types of food that are healthy and natural for our body to process we are hungry less and have more energy.  Another exciting thing we have noticed is that “knock on wood” NONE of our family of 5 have gotten sick!!  Not even a yucky cold!

So, I wanted to let you all know about http://myfitfoods.com to help get you started.  They have 2 locations in San Antonio.  You can order online or at their store.  Their options for meals are delicious and a large variety to chose from.  You can find diabetic friendly, gluten free, wheat free and other options for your meals.  This might be a great way to start out trying new meals that are better for your body.  And if you have as many evening activities as we do, it sure does make kitchen time a heck of a lot easier.  I just pop one of these dinners into the oven to heat up and the kids eat it!  Much healthier option than a frozen pizza!  I don’t use them every night but I do love having my freezer full of healthier options on those busy nights.  Nights that I am home I stay simple with an all natural meat and organice vegetables and bread for sides.

Our new saying around the house to the kids is, “You are what you eat!  If you eat junk, you feel like junk.  If you eat good, you feel good.”  Our older kids get it!  I’ve noticed even at birthday parties they sometimes don’t even want all the cake and ice cream because they realize how it makes their tummy hurt afterwards.  I still like it and enjoy the splurge :) but I can definitely tell when I chose unhealthy options.  My body pays for it later.  Give it a try with your family!  You won’t regret working hard at making sure the foods you put into your body is helping you to live a healthier and longer life!

10 Points of Joyful Parenting

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

My friend Lisa sent this to me and it was too good not to share with each of you!  These are 10 parenting tips that author Ann Voskamp writes about in her book called A Holy Experience.

1.  Today, I will make our home a house of prayer.  I will pray at set times.  And I will invite our children to come move into an interior space that lives with God.

2.  Today, I will transfigure all things into beauty, and I will refuse to see anything else.

3.  Today, I will not have any emergencies. There are no emergencies! Only amateurs hurry.

4.  Today, when stress mounts, I pray to dismount it with gratitude. My stress management plan will be intervention with verbal thanks.  I can only feel one feeling at a time, and I choose to give thanks at all times.  Fight feeling with feeling!

5. Today, I will pray to speak words that are only STRONG words, words that make these children feel strong.  Grace words.  Grace is the only non-toxic air.  All other words I breathe are death words.

6. Today, I will pray to be consistently consistentI will create safe rhythms that our children can find security in.  I will create daily ceremonies because everyday we are CELEBRATING the gift of now!

7.  Today, the moment when I am most repelled by a child’s behavior, that is my sign to draw the very closest to that child.

8.  Today, I will hug each of my children as many times as I serve them meals — because children’s hearts feed on touch.  I’ll look for as many opportunities to touch my children today as possible — the taller they are, the more so.

9.  Today, my priorities will be all Things Unseen.

10.  Today, I will laugh!  And I will let the little children laugh!  I will create a culture of JOY!

St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church of Boerne Fall Festival

Monday, September 26th, 2011

 Saturday, October 1st, 2011

The St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church of Boerne Fall Festival has always been one of the most fun, exciting and successful events of the year for our growing community, and this year will be no different, as final preparations are underway for Bringing the Celebration Home! This year’s event promises to be all that and more with new twists that will make this October 1st event one to be remembered by the parish, residents of Boerne, and those in the surrounding area.

Kicking off this year’s event will be the second annual 5K Run/Walk. The participants will tour historic Boerne, beginning and finishing at the Family Life Center on the parish grounds. Registration fee for 5K Run/Walk is $25, and race-day registration will begin at 7:00am. Race start time is 8:00am.

This daylong event will close with nationally recognized Contemporary Christian Recording Artist, Shawn McDonald, performing live and in-concert in the St. Peter The Apostle Catholic Church Sanctuary beginning at 7:30pm. It will be acoustic and inspirational, so everyone will enjoy!! There will also be a meet and greet with Shawn McDonald supported by K-LOVE on campus to support the Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center, tentatively around 4:45 pm in front of the church. K-LOVE will broadcast the info!

The Fall Festival 2011 will also feature children’s entertainment section with rides and games, live entertainment throughout the day, a rummage sale, BBQ Brisket lunch available, various food booths and Bingo.

Participants, family members and friends may enjoy refreshments and take a peak at the soon to be completed “Upper Room”, a multi-use community venue/banquet hall sitting atop our main campus that features the most beautiful sunset views in the Texas Hill Country. The venue will be available for the public to reserve and will serve as an unmatched option for special events such as wedding receptions, reunions, company parties, and anniversaries…just to name a few. This banquet hall holds up to 400 people, with complete kitchen/catering facilities and boasts a beautiful veranda at its entrance.

Parent’s Night Out

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Make a date night for September 23 and take your kids over to Boerne Gymnastics to play while you dine out with your honey!  If you are looking for an affordable and fun way to entertain your kids and can’t find a babysitter, why not try taking them to a fun night of open gym, climbing, games, movie, pizza and drinks.

From 6:00-10:30 pm you can drop your kids off while the staff at Boerne Gymnastics entertain and keep your kids safe.  Everyone ages 4 and up are welcome.  The cost is $25/member and $30/nonmembers.  That’s cheaper than hiring a babysitter to come over for 4 hours!!  Limited space and you must sign up ahead of time.  Contact 830-816-9496 to reserve your spot.  Almost sounds like enough fun for me to sign up and go play :)

Reading With Your Kiddos!

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Corduroy [Book]Taking time out of your day to read with your kids will not only bless their lives, but yours too!  We worked really hard this summer to read new books with the kids and talk about what we read when we finished the book.  It was amazing to hear their perspectives. Sometimes I would rush through bath, book, and prayer time that I never sat and allowed my kids to digest and discuss what we read.  My eyes were opened and my heart was filled with warmth as I sat and listened to what the kids learned from the books.  And now we refer to different stories throughout our day and recall different lessons they may have learned.

I encourage you to take the time to read to your children.  It’s something they will enjoy doing with you and hopefully encourage them to want to read more on their own.  Some of our favorite books:

Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, Harry the Dirty Dog, Ella the Elegant Elephant, Click Clack Moo, The Wizard of Oz, The Little Engine That Could, Curious George, Little Black Sambo and Corduroy.
